Rangers manager Philippe Clement was full of excuses as he shared his instant reaction to the Light Blues’ disappointing draw with Dundee.
The Gers missed the opportunity to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table as they failed to convert a string of chances in a 0-0 draw with Dundee at Dens Park on Wednesday (17 April).
While the Light Blues were once again nowhere near their best and looked miles off of the pace, Clement was quick to point to the home side’s display and heap praise on Jon McCracken for his display between the posts.
Speaking on Sky Sports Football (17 April, 22:15) he said: “They kept the structure, we created enough chances to win the game, but the ball didn’t go in the net. That’s the story of today.
“There was a good goalkeeper on the other side as well who made a few good saves and they stopped a few balls on the line so that part of luck was not on our side and because of that you don’t get results.”
Pressure growing on Rangers and Philippe Clement as Celtic handed advantage in title race
While Clement is right to suggest McCracken and the rest of the Dundee defence had excellent games, the Gers didn’t do anywhere near enough to claim all three points at Dens Park and only have themselves to blame.
While the Scottish keeper did manage to make five saves in the contest, he only faced an xG of 0.27 as Clement’s side only registered five shots on target. They need to be more clinical if they want to pip Celtic to the title this season.
Both at Dens Park and against Ross County last time out, the Light Blues have struggled to create clear chances in the final third. Most of the blame will lie with the players on the pitch, but questions have to be asked of the Gers boss.
How can Rabbi Matondo not be starting week in and week out when he has been excellent off of the bench? What has Fabio Silva done to start each and every game? Something simply has to change.
Hopefully, the Gers boss will put the excuses to one side ahead of the Scottish Cup semi-final against Hearts at Hampden on Sunday (21 April). Rangers simply have to win or the pressure will continue to mount.
