Kris Boyd believes Derek McInnes would be a good option for Rangers when they eventually have to replace Philippe Clement.
Clement has worked wonders at Ibrox since replacing Michael Beale seven months ago and will hopefully remain Gers boss for years to come.
However, when the Belgian does move on, Boyd reckons the work McInnes has done at Kilmarnock makes him a contender to succeed Clement.
“It would have to be a really attractive opportunity for him to jump at the first offer from a bigger Scottish club or the English Championship,” Boyd wrote in his Scottish Sun column [3 May].
“And I’ll throw this out there, could Rangers have another look at McInnes should Philippe Clement move on for any reason in the coming year or so?
“A former Gers star, he knocked the job back in 2017 when the club didn’t have the stability it does now. His stance on an offer will probably have changed, and the Ibrox board will surely have been impressed by his work down at Rugby Park.”
Derek McInnes tipped with Rangers job
McInnes has indeed done a good job at Kilmarnock, which will of course see his name touted as a contender for the Rangers job.
However, if Clement was to depart in the next year or so for whatever reason, this would be considered a hugely underwhelming appointment.
The search for Beale’s successor showed the direction the club intends to go with managerial appointments – look at those away from Britain.
Clement was not exactly a household name this time last year, yet he soon settled in and has proved to be a very good appointment.
Incidentally, McInnes was touted as a contender to take over from Beale last year, but it is not known how true those reports were.
It is more likely that the 52-year-old will be in the running to replace Steve Clarke as Scotland head coach once the latter departs the job.
And from the Gers’ perspective, talk of a new manager is far too premature because Clement is not going anywhere any time soon.
In other Rangers news, Clement has been warned that Jack Butland could be sold this summer if his valuation is met.
