Rangers are scouring the transfer market for a new goalkeeper, with Robby McCrorie and Jon McLaughlin potentially set to leave this summer, according to Keith Jackson.
Jackson suggests that McCrorie, 26, will look to move on at the end of the campaign due to a lack of game-time.
McLaughlin, meanwhile, is out of contract in the summer and is unlikely to be offered an extension at the age of 36.
Journalist Jackson wrote for the Daily Record [2 May]: “[Head of recruitment Nils] Koppen will already be studying goalkeeping options given Robby McCrorie must be running low on patience now that he’s turned 26 and still can’t get a sniff of regular first-team action.
“Ten years his senior, and out of contract at the end of the season, Jon McLaughlin is another who could be ready to move on.”
Robby McCrorie has barely been used by Rangers
McCrorie is entitled to be frustrated with his lack of minutes for Rangers this season.
Philippe Clement has overwhelmingly chosen to stick with the tried and tested excellence of newly crowned Rangers Player of the Year Jack Butland, who has played 4,770 minutes in his 53 appearances across all competitions this term [Transfermarkt].
McCrorie, as a result, has been limited to just one outing, playing 90 minutes in the Scottish FA Cup fourth round against Dumbarton.
At the age of 26, one game a season is far from sufficient – and that he is not even being trusted across the early stages of the two cup competitions speaks volumes about his standing at the club.
It is therefore entirely fair that he would choose to seek pastures new in an attempt to relaunch a stuttering career – he has made just seven first-team appearances for Rangers since the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
McLaughlin, meanwhile, did not feature once this season and all signs point to the club allowing their veteran goalkeeper to leave on a free transfer in the summer.
And it therefore seems a fresh face is likely to be brought in between the sticks before the 2024-25 campaign begins.
In other Rangers news, another first-team exit is now on the cards with a player now ready to make a four-year commitment to a European club this summer.
