Rangers are making good progress in their bid to extend the loan deal of Oscar Cortes, according to ESPN journalist Julian Capera.
Cortes arrived in Glasgow during the January transfer window on loan from Ligue 1 side Lens but underwent surgery for a posterior muscle injury just eight games into his spell at Ibrox.
Capera, of Colombia’s Futbol Red, reported on 4 May: “Rangers and Lens are working on extending the deal of Colombian Oscar Cortes, who has already completed two months of recovery after his surgery.
“The current loan is about to expire, but the new agreement is on the right track.”
Manager Philippe Clement admitted ahead of the Gers’ crucial clash with Kilmarnock that Cortes’ season was over, but that discussions were underway between the club and Lens over the 20-year-old.
Cortes had scored and assisted in four Ligue 1 appearances before arriving in Scotland, having joined Lens from homeland club Millonarios last summer.
How should Rangers approach the Oscar Cortes deal?
Cortes cost Lens £4million last year when they plucked him from his native Colombia as a teenager.
Before being struck down with injury in late February, it was widely believed Rangers would take up their option to buy the winger this summer, but now there are naturally question marks over his fitness record.
The option already in place would trigger a contract until 2028 for the full international, who has already debuted for Los Cafeteros alongside the likes of James Rodriguez and Luis Diaz.
A fee therefore would likely already have been agreed since January, though Rangers will now understandably treat the deal with kid gloves.
Another loan move may seem the most productive way to protect Rangers’ interests whilst also giving Cortes a chance to return to full fitness and enjoy a good run of football.
Clearly a talented player and a proven investment by Lens, Cortes will be eager to prove that Rangers’ faith in him has not been in vain.
Rangers’ attacking recruitment in the past 12 months has been shaky, and it’s imperative that if indeed it costs them the title this year, that the same mistakes aren’t repeated.
