Rangers have released their confirmed starting XI for the SPFL clash with St Mirren as Philippe Clement has named Fabio Silva from the start despite recent criticism.
Clement’s decision will likely bring plenty of controversy given the spotlight on Silva after being accused of diving amid several disappointing performances at Ibrox, and while the change was forced due to a lack of options, it does not bode well.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (23 April, 17:16) John Hartson said: “It’s embarrassing isn’t it, even his own players have to have a word with him. After the Celtic game, it was like banging on the floor and it is just absolutely ridiculous.”
Abdallah Sima and Rabbi Matondo were also dropped out of the starting lineup, with Borna Barisic and Silva coming into the team looking to keep Gers’ title hopes alive.
This comes after the boss confirmed Sima, Ridvan Yilmaz, Ryan Jack and Matondo would miss the game through injury.
Philippe Clement gets it wrong for Rangers v St Mirren
Silva has been roundly slammed for his recent performances at Ibrox, with Derek Ferguson insisting he offers “absolutely nothing” for the team as he laughed at the reported £35million price tag placed on the forward.
Meanwhile, the likes of Hartson and Chris Sutton have labelled the Portuguese “embarrassing” and “ridiculous” after his recent antics on the pitch with diving accusations levelled at the forward.
A 2-0 victory against Hearts last time out was just what Clement’s side needed to get back to winning ways, but they must ensure they take all three points against St Mirren to avoid going four league games without a victory.
The inclusion of Silva in the side – while largely an enforced change – may come as a blow to their chances of winning those points given the underwhelming standard of his recent performances.
Celtic, meanwhile, will face Dundee at Dens Park, just weeks after the hosts held Rangers to a 0-0 draw, and the Ibrox clubs will be hoping they can pull off a similar display against their title rivals to bring inspiration to their challenge.
