Kris Boyd has slammed Rangers pair Todd Cantwell and Fabio Silva for their performances in the 0-0 draw with Dundee at Dens Park on 17 April.
Silva and Cantwell were both hooked by head coach Philippe Clement in the 56th minute after ineffective showings in which they failed to genuinely trouble the Dundee defence.
Boyd did not hold back in his assessment of the duo, who feels the Gers’ forwards need to step up.
He said live on Sky Sports: “I didn’t really see any clear-cut [goalscoring opportunities].
“Rangers got into plenty of good positions on the pitch. Fabio Silva, there was [a chance] in the second as well and he was sleeping. When you get into those positions as a forward player, you’ve got to get on the move and make up the mind of your winger.
“You are talking about big players stepping up. Cantwell, what has he done tonight again? Lawrence? You are looking for more.
“I think Sima – yes, he is coming back from injury – but you are looking for more. Kemar Roofe, again, he’s not played football in a long time but Rangers never really created anything for him. He’s a penalty box striker. If you get the ball in there he has shown he will score goals.
“Dessers came on and it didn’t really work. From a forward point of view, the substitutions were poor. Rangers have got problems at this moment in time.”
Rangers need to get their season back on track
The Gers’ recent results have derailed their Scottish Premiership title tilt, with the 3-3 draw against Celtic at Ibrox Stadium the start of a three-match winless run.
A shock 3-2 defeat at Ross County handed their rivals the initiative, leaving Rangers four points off the title pace with a game in hand.
Clement’s men still retained control of their title destiny at that point, however, but their failure to win that game in hand at Dens Park – in a match postponed twice due to issues with the pitch – means Rangers are now reliant on a Celtic slip-up and must likely be perfect in order to capitalise on that.
Silva and Cantwell have mustered just seven goals between them all season – two for Silva, five for Cantwell – and must step up their contribution as the campaign draws to a close.
If Rangers are to make a success of this season, they need all their forwards firing on all cylinders.
In other Rangers news, a John Lundstram contract update has emerged with his deal set to expire at the end of the season.
